Motherhood
Jade's Choice
Jade stood in the kitchen, her heart racing. She felt the heat from the stove, the smell of burnt toast filling the air. Her six-year-old son, Milo, sat at the table, twirling his fork, a frown etched on his face. Just moments ago, he had burst into tears, upset over a spelling test he hadnβt studied for. As his mother, she wanted to comfort him, to fix everything. But at that moment, her phone pinged β a text from a friend asking her to join a last-minute dinner. The choice loomed before her like a dark shadow.
Jade's mind raced. She wanted to say yes to the dinner. She craved the laughter of friends and the escape from motherhood for just a little while. But looking at Milo's tear-streaked face, she felt guilty for even thinking about leaving him. She knew he needed her now, but the thought of missing out haunted her. The pressure built inside her β the desire to be a fun friend clashed hard with her role as his mom. "I wish I could just be two people for a moment," she whispered under her breath, eyes misting over.
Finally, as she took a breath, she found herself standing at a crossroads. Should she text her friend back, tell her sheβd come, and leave Milo feeling neglected? Should she force a smile, be the fun mom while knowing she could also teach him a lesson about responsibility? Or could she take the harder path β sit down with Milo and help him study for his next test, even if it meant missing out on the dinner? With a deep sense of longing, she looked at Milo, who was now quietly doodling in his notebook, waiting for her to make a choice. She felt faith whispering for the harder choice, the one that meant choosing love over easy fun.
