The Colorful Chaos of Heather
Heather sat at her tiny kitchen table, papers scattered in a whirlwind around her. The deadline was looming, and she could feel the pressure squeezing her chest. You see, she was supposed to finish the report for her job, but the words danced around in her head like fireflies, flicking in and out of reach. Her phone buzzed for the third time with a reminder about the deadline. She frowned at it. It felt like a ticking bomb, each buzz pushing her further from focus.
She wanted to dive into the report. Really, she did. But every time she read a sentence, her mind darted off to the laundry piling up, the dishes waiting in the sink, or even the half-finished craft project on the shelf. "Just focus!" she muttered to herself. Her heart raced with frustration. She was stuck in a tug-of-war between wanting to do well and feeling overwhelmed by her own mind. It wasn’t that she didn’t care—she just felt like she was swimming upstream. The chaos felt suffocating, and she longed for peace but didn't know how to find it.
With dusk settling in, she glanced at the window and saw her neighbor, Mrs. Hughes, watering her flowers, gentle and steady. Something about the sight calmed her... yet, Heather’s phone buzzed again, shoving her back into her swirling thoughts.
She had a choice to make. She could ignore the report, pour a glass of wine, and forget it until morning. It felt like an easy escape, but she knew it wouldn’t solve anything. Or, she could email her boss to ask for help, something that felt brave but also made her skin crawl with shame. The hardest option? Telling everyone that she struggles with ADHD, asking for understanding, and really committing to change. What would they think of her?
For now, she was stuck. In that moment, she took a deep breath. "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7 NIV). Sometimes, it feels heavy to ask for help, but you're never alone. Have faith; you are loved and guided no matter your journey.
