Bullying

Facing the Tide

The fluorescent lights of the school hallway buzzed above Heather as she clutched her books tightly to her chest. She could feel the stares from the popular girls at the end of the hall, their eyes narrowing and whispers erupting into laughter when she passed. As she fished her phone out of her bag, a familiar notification flashed: a new message in her group chat filled with mocking memes about her latest art project, critiques masked as jokes, hitting her like arrows to her heart. "It’s just art, guys! I'm just trying to express how I feel!" she typed back, but deleted it before it could hit send. Later that evening, she sat at the family dinner table, the clattering of forks and the scent of spaghetti filling the air, but her head swirled with thoughts of tomorrow. Her mom chatted animatedly with her dad about mundane work stories, oblivious to the storm cloud of anxiety shadowing Heather. "Mom, can I talk to you?" she finally said, her voice cracking like she was about to confess a secret, and although she craved her mom's comfort, she feared the conversation would only lead to dismissive platitudes that wouldn’t offer her solace. That night, as she lay in bed scrolling social media, Heather felt the weight of the world pressing down on her. A few messages popped up from a longtime friend, encouraging her to post about the bullying, call out the girls in public to make a stand, and gather support. But Heather hesitated—would that only amplify her pain and paint her as an even bigger target? She sighed heavily, staring at a quote from Proverbs that she had saved. "When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent (Proverbs 10:19, ESV)." The scripture echoed in her mind, igniting a desire to respond wisely. Should she confront it boldly, seek advice from a trusted teacher, or just avoid the confrontation altogether? The decision loomed heavy on her heart, ready to dictate the course of her week and her self-worth.

Biblical Guidance

In moments of bullying, it’s wise to pause and seek guidance, rather than react out of hurt or anger. God calls us to be prudent in our responses, allowing space for wisdom instead of impulsive decisions driven by pain.
