Bullying

A Text Away

Heather stared at her phone, the glow of the screen illuminating her face in the dim light of her bedroom. A group chat buzzed with messages from her classmates, a flurry of laughing emojis and inside jokes that felt like daggers piercing her heart. Buried between the lines was a photo of her from last week, taken at the mall—a candid shot that made her feel vulnerable, awkward—but the cruel caption ‘When you try too hard’ turned the pang into an ache she couldn’t shake off. With her parents downstairs, oblivious to the storm brewing inside her, Heather’s mind raced. The messages were coming fast now, more pictures and more taunts, and all she could think about was how she wished she had someone to turn to who would understand. Snapping back in anger wasn’t an option; she had seen how quickly things escalated. Instead, she glanced at her journal where she scribbled her hopes, thoughts, and prayers, feeling the weight of loneliness wrap around her like a heavy blanket. The clock ticked ominously as she contemplated her next move, fingers hovering over the keyboard of her phone. She could just leave the group chat, pretend it didn’t hurt, but that would feel like giving up. Or maybe she could confront them, but would that lead to more ridicule? Gathering her thoughts, she remembered a verse her youth pastor had shared earlier this year: 'If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.' (1 Peter 4:14, ESV) It was a reminder that standing her ground might just be the strength she needed. But was she ready to be bold about her faith in this moment?
